Italy, sea and mountains - ski holidays and hiking holidays
Holiday apartments, holiday houses,
hotels in the Italian Alps - South Tyrol, Trentino, The Dolomites
At the thought of holiday in Italy
beach and sea probably come first into people’s mind. This isn’t
surprising as the largest part of Italy lies on the Apennines
peninsula, which is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Only the
extreme north of Italy includes also alpine regions.
Italy is politically subdivided into 20 regions each with its own
government, from which the following (from west to east) have a share
in the alpine region: Trentino,
South
Tyrol,
Veneto,
Piedmont,
Aosta Valley,
Lombardy,
Friuli-Venezia Giulia. |
|

The region of Veneto offers really everything. On one hand you can
spend wonderful seaside holidays with endless sand beaches on the
Adriatic coast, on the other hand the mountain summits of the
Dolomites in the north promise holiday adventure of quite a
special kind. Lake Garda combines water and mountains in most
pleasant way and also art and cultural lovers find in Venice and
Verona many interesting things. A region can hardly be more
contrasting!
The most famous alpine regions of Veneto:
-
Arraba
-
Cortina dÁmpezzo
- Marmolada
-
Lake
Garda (the northern part belongs to Trentino-South Tyrol, the
western part to Lombardy and the eastern part to Veneto)
Trentino-South
Tyrol (Italian: Trentino-Alto Adige) is a further very popular
holiday region in the north of Italy, on the sunny side of the
Alps. The feature of this region is very much characterized by the
Alps, in particular the Dolomites. The Italian name of the region
„Alto Adige“ derived from the river Etsch and means as much as
„Upper Adige“.
Popular holiday regions in South Tyrol:
- Vinschgau
- Meraner Land
- Eisack Valley
- The Dolomites
- Tauferer Ahrntal valley
- Bolzano and its surrounding area
As its name already implies, the region of Piedmont indicates its
local surrounding, as the Italian word “Piemonte” literally means
„ at the foot of the mountains“. Piedmont, the northwesternmost
region of Italy, borders on Switzerland in the north and on France
in the west. From the tourist’s point of view are following areas
in the Piedmont most known:
Lake Maggiore
The Langhe (a hilly area with its city of Alba, well known to
gourmets as “truffle capital”) and Sestriere (site of the Olympic
Winter Games 2006).
The Aosta Valley is the smallest region of Italy and is considered
as autonomous region with special status. In the west the Aosta
Valley borders on the Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the
Alps. Very famous are the winter sports places Courmayeur and
Breuil Cervinia (connected with Zermatt/Switzerland with an
interconnected ski area).
The Lombardy with its famous capital city of Milan extends between
Lake Maggiore, river Po and Lake Garda. Beside the wonderful
mountain areas, as for example around the towns of Bormio and
Livigno, are above all also the Upper Italian lakes
-
Lake Maggiore
- Lago di Lugano (Lake Liganoo)
-
Lake
Como
- Lago d'Iseo (Lake Iseo)
-
Lake
Garda
particularly attractive to holidaymakers. Here you have the
possibility to combine perfectly mountains and water.
In the extreme northeast of Italy lies the region Friuli-Venezia
Giulia, whose capital city is the Adriatic seaport of Trieste. The
area around the city of Tarvisio, which is located in the
tri-state region of Italy, Austria and Slovenia, is a very famous
mountain and winter sports area.
