Zillertal: Skiing holiday in the Ziller
Valley
Mayerhofen, Zell, Fügen, Hippach,
Finkenberg, Hintertux, Stumm
The Tyrolean
Zillertal valley is a winter sports
region of superlatives. Over 600 kilometres of ski runs stretches here
over five skiing areas, distributed on a valley length of ca. 50
kilometres and ca. 25 municipalities. Numerous awards prove that here
you can enjoy winter sports under optimal conditions.
Skiing and snowboarding
About ten kilometres after the motorway exit you reach in
Fügen the first skiing area at the
Spieljoch with its 21 predominantly moderately difficult ski runs and
a long valley descent.
From
Fügen via a winding mountain road you get to the hotel village of
Hochfügen. In the pleasantly extensive skiing area of the high valley
the ski season lasts due to the altitude traditionally until 1st May. Via a “Skischaukel” you have access to the Hochzillertal skiing
area, which is also attainable from the valley starting from the
village of Kaltenbach. The interconnecting ski area of
Hochzillertal-Hochfügen offers altogether 155 kilometres of ski runs
with predominantly moderately difficult character. Real expert skiers
find challenging terrain for example on the slope no. 6 in
Hochzillertal as well as on the “Stephan Eberharter Goldpiste”, a
descent leading down into the valley to Kaltenbach.
From here further on into the valley you come to the geographical and
historical centre of the valley –
Zell am Ziller. From Zell you have access to 160 kilometres of
very well groomed ski runs of the skiing area Zillertal Arena, which
spread over the extensive area between Zell, Gerlos, Königsleiten/Wald
and Krimml/Hochkrimml. Varied ski runs of all levels of difficulty and
quaint mountain huts create best conditions for ski pleasure without
alloy.
In Mayrhofen, the largest
settlement of the valley, the Zillertal branches off into four high
mountain valleys. From Mayrhofen you have access to 157 kilometres of
ski runs in the skiing area “Zillertal 3000”. Further places to enter
this skiing area are Hippach and
Finkenberg. With the large choice
of most different ski runs everyone finds the suitable terrain. A
special challenge represents, however, the descent on the Harakiri
with a gradient of 78%. Beginners appreciate also the skiing area at
the Ahorn on the other side of Mayrhofen with its 18 kilometres of ski
runs. Real expert skiers will surely tackle the 5 km long “Filzenabfahrt”. |
Then in the head of the valley follows the all-year-round skiing area
of the Hintertux Glacier - the Ski
and Glacier World Zillertal 3000. Altogether 227 kilometres of ski
runs spread over the skiing areas Eggalm, Rastkogel, Penken,
Finkenberger Almbahnen, Ahorn and of course the Hintertux Glacier. A
special highlight is the 12 km long glacier slope from the “Gefrorenen
Wand” down to the bottom of the valley to the lower terminus of
Hintertux. Or how about a glacier circuit where you can cover a
distance of 72 kilometres?
Snowboard specials
Spread over the whole valley there are attractive ski destinations for
snowboarders and freeskiers. A special highlight is the Burton-Park-Mayrhofen
located at the Sunjet/Hintertrett chairlift with numerous facilities.
In the Zillertal Arena, boarders meet at the Sportbahn Kapauns with
its deep powder snow slopes, the Wilden Krimml as well as at the
Kreuzjoch. Freestylers are attracted by
Gerlos, where they find also a
mega halfpipe. In the skiing area Hochzillertal/Hochfügen fun and
action are guaranteed in a snow park. Of course the glacier also
offers a halfpipe as well as a Funpark situated next to the Olperer
T-bar lift.
Cross-country skiing
Apart from the alpine skiers also the cross-country skiers won’t miss
anything in the Zillertal valley. This winter sport can be exercised
on altogether ca. 200 kilometres of cross-country ski trails in the
Zillertal. Especially on the part of the valley from Fügen to
Mayrhofen each village has prepared a presentable network of
cross-country trails. Most cross-country ski runs are suitable both
for beginners and for advanced skiers, in the broad valley floor of
the Zillertal valley the snow can easily run low, so that
alternatively a change over to the high-altitude trails in Hochfügen
and in the Hochzillertal or in the Tux Valley is necessary.
Especially beautiful are the cross-country ski trails
“Promenadenloipe” starting from Kaltenbach and the “Märzenloipe” in
Stumm.
