The largest lakes of Switzerland
Switzerland - the land of lakes - more than only mountains!

Probably most people associate Switzerland spontaneously with the unique mountain landscape of the Swiss Alps, with sounding mountain names such as Matterhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. That this country - mainly due to the glaciation during the glacial periods - also has ca. 1500 lakes is mostly realised only at second sight.

The majority of these lakes are though smaller mountain lakes, but there are also some larger ones, which enjoy an extremely great popularity as excursion and holiday destination.

The scenic contrast between the mountains and water are very appealing and inspiring to many recreation seekers and the excellent water quality of the lakes is very appreciated by water sportsmen. Some of the mountain lakes even have pleasant bathing temperatures.
Also cyclists can explore the beautiful lakeland area of Switzerland along interesting routes. Switzerland’s Route No. 9 carries the name “Lakes Route” (route des lacs) and runs over a length of about 500 km von Montreaux at Lake Geneva over Thun, Lucerne, Zug and Sargans through to Rorschach at Lake Constance. The route leads, like its name already implies, along many beautiful lakes, as for example the Lake Thun, Lake Brienz, Lake Lucerne and Lake Walen.

Switzerland, the land of lakes - water sports, hiking and cycling amidst a wonderful landscape!
