The Lake Geneva - Lac Léman
The Lake
Geneva is located in the southwest of Switzerland, on the
border of France and belongs partly to Switzerland (cantons of Geneva,
Vaud and Valais) as well as along its south bank to France. It is the
second largest lake of Central Europe and even two large Swiss cities
are situated on the shore of the lake: Geneva at the southern tip as
well as Lausanne on the north shore. Vevey and Montreux, both situated
on the northeast shore, are likewise very well known, the latter
particularly because of its large offer of cultural events (e.g.
Montreux Jazz Festival). The larger cities of Thonon-les-Bains and
Evian are situated on the French side of the lake.
The landscape is due to the appealing combination of water and
mountains very attractive. This successful combination is
additionally
enriched by interesting cities, innumerable excursion possibilities
and a pleasant climate along with appertaining profuse vegetation. Not
in vain, Montreux also carries the surname "Pearl of the Swiss
Riviera".
Orientated towards the Alps, good-sounding names such as Gstaad,
Zermatt and the Matterhorn are within reach for a day trip. The
wine-growing area of Lavaux with its picturesque terraced vineyards
high above the lake belongs to the UNESCO World Heritance and invites
to hiking and cycling tours. It is not amazing that the region at Lake
Geneva with its scenic beauty is also a real paradise for gourmets and
wine connoisseurs. Many a traveller will go into raptures over the
high concentration of restaurants, which can refer to awards in
gourmet guides, as well as the numerous wine cellars and wine growers.
In winter the wonderful ski areas in the Lake Geneva region are
worthwhile destinations for skiers and snowboarders. You have the
agony of the choice between the slopes of Aigle, Château d'Oex /
Rougemont, Les Diablerets, Leysin, Les Mosses, Villars / Gryon as well
as Les Portes du Soleil.
