Things to know, regions and landscapes in South Tyrol
South Tyrol lies south of the main chain of the Alps and is the
northernmost Italian province. Together with the province of Trentino
it forms the autonomous province of Trentino-South Tyrol. The
provincial capital is Bolzano.
South Tyrol is an absolute top holiday destination for your holiday in
the mountains, more than 60% of the area lies at a height of over 1500
meters and only 14% below 1000 meters!
The province borders on Austria (to the north and the east), on
Switzerland (to the northwest) and on Italy (to the south).
Most of the population is German-speaking, other languages spoken here
are Italian and Ladin.

Things to know about the Dolomites
The Dolomites is probably the most famous region of South Tyrol. The
approximately 150 kilometres long and up to 80 kilometres wide
mountain chain of the Southern Lime Alps is not exclusively located on
South Tyrolean area, but extends to the regions of Trentino and
Veneto. It reaches from of the Italian regions of Trentino-South Tyrol
and Veneto resp. their provinces of South Tyrol, Trento and Belluno
(Veneto).
The Dolomites are bordered by the Puster Valley to the north, by
Sexten, the Kreuzbergsattel and the Piave to the east, again by the
Piave and the line of Feltre-Genebe/Enego and the Sugana Valley
(Valsugana) to the south, and by the valleys of Etsch and Eisack to
the west.

The highest mountain of the Dolomites is the Marmolada with 3342
meters in height; Further 17 summits reach likewise heights of over
3000 meters.
The name “Dolomites” and the dolomite rock are derived from the French
researcher, Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu, who was the first to research
and describe the dolomite rock. Before the Dolomites were known as
„pale mountains“ (Monti pallidi) because of their bright limestone
sediments.
Here, amidst beautiful mountain scenery, South Tyrol presents itself
from its most impressing side. Impressive summits, steep rocks, gentle
valleys and a species-rich flora and fauna make the Dolomites a world

Valley, Civetta, Fleimstal, Eisack Valley and Rotwand.
