Due to the mild climate you can swim in Lake Maggiore throughout
the year. The less tough ones among the visitors choose, however,
the summer months. Who loves water sports can really rage oneself
out, apart from swimming, diving and snorkelling it is also
possible to go wakeboarding, water skiing, surfing, to drive a
banana boat or motorboat, go sailing, jet skiing and much more.
On the western shore, on the mountain river Sesia, there are also
fantastic possibilities for kayaking, rafting and canoeing.
On the northern part of Lake Maggiore, in Ticino, you have to pay
entrance on most of the beaches. However, they are all well
maintained and also beautiful public swimming pools are on offer.
In Brissago, for example, there is a beautiful swimming pool.
In almost all places around the lake you can swim, the beaches are
shingle beaches, sometimes with more, sometimes with less rough
gravels. The beaches are generally clean and well maintained. The
water of Lake Maggiore is very clean and clear, so that divers
will have a great time. In some places you can look as far as 20
meters.
Particularly in the north of the lake the water is very clean.
However, it becomes hardly warmer than 22 degrees. There are free
public beaches, the so-called Spiaggia, which are announced on
brown-white signs. In addition there are numerous beaches, where
you have to pay entrance and also private beaches bordering on
villas. |
The private beaches are nowadays, thanks to the initiative of the
villa owners, mostly opened to the public for swimming, you only have
to ring at the door and then obtain permission to swim on the
beautiful beach.

The beaches around the lake are mostly very charming and lined of
palms and olive trees. In Ascona is a particularly beautiful and
popular beach, where you don’t have to pay entrance.
In Cannero Riviera there is a beautiful, 400 to meter long sand beach,
at which you can lie wonderfully in the sun and relax, while the
children play in the sand and build castles. Also near Verbania at the
estuary mouth of the Borromaen Gulf there are further beautiful sand
beaches.
Who likes it more peaceful, can also try the rocky beaches along the
rivers in the backcountry, where the water is, however, cooler.
Divers find numerous interesting diving places on Lake Maggiore.
Particularly on the upper part of Lake Maggiore there are beautiful
places where you can undertake easy but nevertheless interesting
dives.
Near San Nazzaro you can go on a wreck tour and explore wrecks from
airplanes and boats, which are in depths between 7 and 30 meters.
There is an artificial reef near Maggadino, wonderful steep walls near
Brissago or near Orido di Sant Anna the gorge of the river Cannobino.
However, the surrounding rivers are not only very popular with
swimmers but also with divers. The emerald-green water is here highly
transparent, though partly quite cold. The view under water is
spectacular.
On dives in rivers caution is required, as there are in some places
strong currents, in particular after intensive rainfalls it can become
dangerous.
Also on the lakes in the surroundings there are beautiful beaches. The
Lago di Mergozzo, whose water is much warmer than the water of Lake
Maggiore, has beautiful beaches and is very popular as lake for
swimming.
