Lake
Maggiore, with a length of 65 km and an average width of 4 km is a
heavenly beautiful pre-alpine lake! It lies embedded between the
high mountains of the south Alps and belongs to the most popular
lakes of Europe. Around the lake you find a variety of
accommodations such as holiday houses and holiday apartments.
In the last century the lake was designated as one of the most
beautiful lakes of the world from the well-known Baedeker Travel
Guide. The "Lago" extends from the south Alps to the edge of the
Po Valley. In the north it is surrounded by high rock walls and
offers a picturesque sight. In the south the mountains are less
high and gradually begins the hill country of the moraine area,
which finally merges into the
lowlands of Northern Italy.
The wonderful surroundings and the mild climate in protection of
the mountains, with 280 sunny days resp. 2400 sunshine hours in
the year mainly contribute to its charm. |
The main places on Lake Maggiore
On the shores of the lake grow orange and lemon trees, and camellias
and oleander enchant with their blossoms. The shore slopes are partly
covered with deciduous forest and chestnut groves – very impressing
with the high mountains of the Valle Grande in the background.

Facts
Lake Maggiore is called in German “Langensee” and in Italian “Lago
Verbano”. Like the other lakes of Upper Italy it was formed through
the melting of glaciers. Lake Maggiore is the second largest after
Lake Garda and the westernmost of the three large Italian alpine
lakes. It has a surface of 212 square kilometres.
The largest part of the lake (about 80%) belongs to Italy, where it
forms the boundary line between the two Italian regions of Piedmont
and Lombardy. The smaller part (about 20%) in the extreme north
belongs to Switzerland (canton of Ticino).
The total of the shoreline amounts to about 160 kilometres and
numerous beautiful beaches attract the holidaymakers in the time
between June and September.
The deepest point of the lake is 372 meters, which is more than 170
meters beneath the sea level. Thus it is the deepest lake in
Switzerland.
Main tributary and at the same time the only outlet of the lake is the
river Ticino. In its estuary area thrives a very species-rich fauna
and flora.
Further tributaries are the Verzasca, the Toce and the Maggia.
The lake is very clean and rich in fish and fishermen on Lake Maggiore
fish at least about 150 tons per year.
The passenger shipping industry on the lake exists already since 1826
and operates more than 20 ships. To explore the lake from the ship is
a very special experience.
