Lake Garda - one of the most popular surfing spots in Europe, Ora
and Vento
Surfing, windsurfing, Torbole,
Campione, Garda, Riva, Malcesine, Limone
Reliable
wind conditions and Mediterranean climate make Lake Garda a perfect
spot for surfers and sailors. Especially the northern part of the lake
beyond Malcesine, and in particular the top surfing area near Torbole,
is during the summer months firmly in the hands of surfers. At the
northern tip the lake is most narrow and all around soar high
mountains picturesquely into the sky and the winds are a true
pleasure. Especially the both most famous winds of Lake Garda, Ora and
Vento, blow here. In this northern part of the lake, you can addict
yourself to the exhilaration of the speed and 60 kilometres per hour
can easily be achieved.
But not only professionals, also beginners find their surfer paradise
on Lake Garda, where innumerable surfing stations with rental service
and surfing lessons for each level are available.
The
typical weather on Lake Garda is, despite the proximity to the Alps,
Mediterranean. In the morning it clears up due to the north foehn of
the Alps, then the air warms up by the sun and the south wind flows
from the flat southern part of the lake towards north, up the
mountains. This daily cycle causes that Lake Garda has mostly
beautiful weather and pleasant climate, even when it is cold and
cloud-covered in the mountains.
This pleasant weather and the unique wind guaranty make the lake such
popular for wind surfing as no other inland water and regattas of
international importance are hold here regularly.
The rhythm of the surfers is particularly determined by the cool north
wind, the Vento and the warm south wind, the Ora. The north wind
begins to blow usually around midnight and reaches in the early
morning hours its maximum speed. At this time of the day the best
surfing spot is at Malcesine and at the nearby hotel Pier
Around noon the south wind begins to blow and the surfers change
places to the north point of the lake near Torbole. The south wind
blows then until sunset.
