Beaches
Around Lake Como there are many beautiful beaches, partly small and
hidden, partly spacious and suitable for the whole family. Most
beaches are shingle beaches, however there are also a few sand
beaches.
Since Lake Como and its surrounding area is very much spoilt by the
sun and the climate is due to the surrounding mountains markedly mild,
you can go swimming already in spring and until mid of October. The
water has pleasant temperatures, in summer between 22 and 25 degrees
and it is very clean, as the communities around the lake pay close
attention to the water quality.
Also with children you can spend a marvellous bathing holiday here,
particularly at the northern part of the lake there are many flat
beaches, well suitable for both children and adults. So for example,
the families enjoy visiting Dongo, Gravedona or Domaso, to name but a
few of the possibilities.
The beaches (spiaggia" is Italian for “beach”) are generally open to
the public and for everybody accessible.
Here are some suggestions for swimming
pleasure without alloy:
Dongo, near by the church
This beach lies close to the camping site La Breva and is one of the
most beautiful beaches on Lake Como. Here you can enjoy the sun either
bedded on shingles or on sand and go swimming in the lake as well as
in the river. There is also a lawn with shade-giving trees and a
special attraction, which particularly delights the children: a sand
bank. The beach is well maintained and frequently cleaned. It is an
ideal place in order to have a good time with the whole family, to
relax or to enjoy oneself in the water.
Dongo, La Sciatera
From the centre of Dongo it goes towards Gravedona and at the sign
„Lido“ to the right. Here lies a beautiful shingle beach with
maintained lawns.
Between Dongo and Gravedona
A beautiful promenade connects the two places and along the way you
find numerous small beaches. Along here you also can go by bicycle and
thereby choose the most beautiful small beach.
Gravedona
In Gravedona there is a pretty fishing port. Just on the right side
from the port you find flat beaches, which are well suitable also for
children.
Furthermore there is a beautiful swimming pool with children’s pool
and beach bar at the end of the promontory Poncia. However here you
have to pay entrance.
Domaso
Domaso has a very beautiful and spacious beach. It is 2 kilometres
long and the bath holidaymakers are spoilt with many shade-giving
trees. It is situated directly on the sea-promenade, which is
accessible for pedestrians and cyclists only. The beach is reached
from the parking place at the northern entrance of the town across the
sea-promenade.
Gera Lario
Not far away from the port you find several beautiful beaches in Gera
Lario. They are flat and therefore also well suitable for children. A
special delight for the children are the sand banks, which become
exposed at low tide and are wonderful places for playing. In addition
you also find here well-maintained lawns and a children's playground.
Ideally suited for swimming pleasure with the whole family.
Sorico, La Punta
This place is just the thing for sand castle builders and their
friends: A real sand beach, wherefrom you also have a fantastic view
over the lake. It is tree-lined, so that you can take a rest in the
shade after extensive sunbathing.
After midday this place is also very popular with
surfers and kitesurfers, because starting from about 2 o'clock pm here
blows a pleasant breeze. You can reach the beach by using the bridge
over the river Mera behind Sorcio and then turn to the right. The path
leads past the camping site directly to the beach. |

Colico
In Colico there are several flat large beaches. They are well suitable
for children and therefore very popular with families. One beach is
situated near the beach bar „Marzio“, a second one is a private beach,
but with free entrance. Here you find a beautiful sun terrace and who
feels hungry after an exhausting bath can visit the Pizzeria. In the
bay of Piona there is a further beautiful beach. Here you find also a
bar and a sandwich bar.
Lierna
Towards Varenna lies a wide shingle beach, where also children can
play and swim.
Menaggio
With Menaggio there is a very well maintained beach, however an
entrance fee has to be paid. You can choose whether you would rather
like to swim in the lake or in a heated pool.
Lenno
Also in Lenno you find some very beautiful and maintained beaches. A
popular beach is situated next to the hotel San Giorgio.
Tremezzo
A very special swimming pleasure awaits you in Tremezzo. In a
beautiful park directly on the lake you can relax on a maintained
lawn, swim in the lake or have a snack at the Bistro-Pavilion.
North of Lake Como: The Lago di Mezzola
Also on the Lago di Mezzola, which is only 5 kilometres away from Lake
Como, you can indulge in the pleasure of swimming. The lake is about 3
kilometres wide and 2 kilometres long and surrounded by high
mountains, which are partly almost 3000 meters high.
Novate Mezzola, Lido
Here there is a beautiful sand beach, which is particularly preferred
by young people. There you find sunshades for rent, loungers, a sport
and leisure facility and music.
Dascio
In Dascio you find a beautiful flat beach, not far from the entrance
of the town. From here you also can reach other beaches on the lake
either by boat or canoe. A marvellous canoe trip starting from this
beach is a tour along the river Mera, which connects the Lago di
Mezzola with Lake Como. The route leads though a marvellous unspoilt
nature.
Surfing on Lake Como: Thermal and popular
surfing spots
Surfers, kitesurfers and sailors are absolutely spoilt on Lake Como.
Both in the morning and in the afternoon you can engage in your hobby
and this you already can do starting in February! Then the thermal
awakes from its winter sleep on Lake Como. It reaches its highest
point between June and September and gradually decreases in October
again.
In the north of the lake there is the south wind, the Breva, which
blows here particularly strong. It can reach wind forces up to 4 and
with stable high pressure it blows very steady. In the morning it is
still rather windless however starting from noon the Breva rises and
lures numerous surfers to the northern part of the lake. From later in
the afternoon the wind calms down slowly again.
The best surfing spots in the north of the lake are between Gera Lario
and Colico on the outlet of the river Adda. The Breva blows strongest
near Domaso and near the opposite lying monastery Piona.
Also the south of the lake has plenty to offer to surfers. Here blows
the north wind, the Tivano, already in the early morning. It is
strongest near Lecco. The wind blows from land in direction to Como
and Lecco. It can become quite dangerous, as sometimes it is very
strong and squally and causes high waves. Beginners should rather make
use of the Breva in the north of the lake.
Good spots for the Tivano are about the middle of the lake near
Rezzonico and Dervio.
